It says that “Every idea,
Concept, or conclusion which enters the mind is held as true unless hindered by
some contradictory idea.”. That boils down to keeping the audience yes-minded. “
It is like the movement of
a ball pushed toward one direction, and it takes some force to deflect it, far
more force to send it back in the opposite direction. It also reminds me that
some churches ask people to repeat “Amen “at the end of every sentence that the
pastor says during their worship and I think it is similar to getting a “YES response“from
people.
We sometimes find ourselves
changing our minds without any resistance or heavy emotion, but if we are told
we are wrong we resent the imputation and harden our hearts. We are incredibly
heedless in the formation of our beliefs, but find ourselves filled with an
illicit passion for them when anyone proposes to rob us of their companionship.
It is obviously not the ideas themselves that are dear to us, but our
self-esteem which is threatened.
The result is that most of our so-called
reasoning consists in finding arguments for going on believing as we already
do.
