Little phrases such as “ I’m
sorry to trouble you,” “ Would you be so kind as to..”? “ Won’t you please ?” /
“Would you mind?”. Little courtesies like these oil the cogs of the monotonous
grind of everyday life and incidentally, they are the hallmark of good
breeding.
It is nice to feel liked by
others and to feel special and important in their lives.
This principle is
absolutely key in influencing others and It also reminds me of one story. There
are many cafes and one café was very popular. Their coffee is nothing special
but this particular café always has a long line of people. So, someone asked the owner about their tips. One
story was that one customer dropped a coffee in the car after purchasing it and
it was the customer’s fault.
However, the owner reached
out to the customer and arranged a luxury car wash which is over $100 and paid
for it. If you just think about that math, it is not worth it to pay over $100
for a $5 coffee. But this gesture spread more than a cup of coffee worth. This
customer was so pleased and impressed by their gesture and made it special. So,
it spread to bring more customers eventually.
A Key take away is that if
you make someone special and important, do it sincerely, It will superior for
you in some way.
